Coimbatore: Expressing confidence that inflation would be brought down to a moderate level soon, finance minister P Chidambaram has said the government had taken certain steps in this regard.
“Nobody can be happy with inflation. The government has taken certain steps to bring down inflation and it will come down to a moderate level soon,” he said here.
To a question on salary revision of the bank and insurance sector employees, he said the United Forum of Banking Unions and Indian Bankers Association were engaged in negotiations on the matter.
“Let them come to the ministry. After that we will discuss. Similar is the case with the insurance sector, where unions are engaged in talks,” he said.
Chidambaram, while distributing education loans at the inauguration of the Madapatti branch of Indian Overseas Bank, said Rs 20,000 crore had been disbursed as education loans in the last four years, benefiting 12,51,691 students.
He asked the banks not to be reluctant to disburse education loans.
