î INDIA: PM sets up panel on financial crisis impact

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will head a special panel of top policy makers to deal with the impact of the global financial crisis on industry, following a meeting with corporate leaders this week.

The head of the Reserve Bank and the finance minister would be part of the panel, which will consider issues raised by industry leaders, Singhs office said in a statement.

"The Group will meet regularly to coordinate/decide the government’s response to the points raised by industry from time to time with regard to the current global financial crisis and its impact on India," the statement said.

Singh told top business leaders on Monday that the government would take all necessary monetary and fiscal steps to protect economic growth.
